Windshield Repair With No Deductible in Ontario - What You Actually Need to Know

If you've been putting off a windshield chip repair because you assumed it would cost you something out of pocket, it probably won't. Most Ontario drivers with comprehensive insurance can get a chip repaired at no cost to them and the process is simpler than most people expect.

Here's how it actually works.

Chip repair falls under comprehensive coverage

Auto glass damage is covered under comprehensive insurance, not collision. Comprehensive applies to damage that happens outside of a collision, including stone chips from road debris and cracks from temperature stress or weather damage. If you carry comprehensive coverage, chip repair is almost certainly included.

The deductible is typically waived

In Ontario, most insurers waive the deductible entirely for windshield chip repairs. Repairing a chip is significantly less expensive for the insurer than replacing a full windshield, so covering the repair cost outright makes financial sense for them. The result for you is a repair that costs nothing out of pocket in most cases.

It won't affect your premium

Stone chip repairs are considered a no-fault claim in Ontario. They don't go against your driving record and in most cases don't affect your insurance premium. There's no meaningful downside to making the claim.

Full replacements work differently

For full windshield replacements, your deductible applies based on your policy. Some policies carry a separate, lower glass deductible. If cost is a concern going into a replacement, give us a call before you book and we'll help you understand what your coverage looks like.

Our insurance claims assistance page has more detail on how we handle this at True North.

The one reason not to wait

A chip that qualifies for a no-deductible repair today can spread into a crack that requires a full replacement, particularly once cold weather arrives or after a hard impact on London's roads. If you've got a chip sitting on your windshield right now, the case for getting it looked at is straightforward. Our fall windshield checklist covers exactly what to look out for heading into colder months.

Book online or give us a call at any of our three locations across London and Exeter. If you want to know what to expect when you come in, our windshield repair page walks through the process from booking to drive-away.
